Coulda Fooled Me
A FICTITIOUS SHORT STORY
Abdul stopped smiling and has a look on his face that shows confusion. Next week, he has to return to his hometown to face his past. He has been out here in the street fighting for others, when he left a secret love child with his ex. The woman yelling, is the mother and she wants him to play his role as a father. He is wondering why she showed up because he told her to keep things discreet.
Abdul is rushed to his ride, the tall handsome driver closes the door. His lawyer, staves off photographers but they got a picture of him. The car is moving slowly because there are people all around, including protestors and his tribe. He rides in silence, then his cellphone buzzes. He pulls it out of his pocket and looks at the name on the caller ID. Mama G is flashing, he watches it ring until it goes to his voice mailbox. He is not going to call her back. Abdul has been ignoring her for 3 days.
It’s a long ride to his destination, a swanky hotel in midtown is the current hiding place. They found the place through an agency that helps protect people like witnesses and social justice leaders who fear an attack from their numerous enemies. He does not know what to expect. Abdul X feels unprotected.
The hotel is hidden on a long driveway. Access is not easy and the price is out of range for average 54,000 salary person. However, there is a media circus here too. Did someone leak his information? Abdul gets out of the car and no one notices him. They are not there for him. He is walking through the spacious lobby and sees a gentleman surrounded by security. Maybe they are there for him. People stop and whisper, “That is James B. Marshall.” Abdul sighs with relief because the multi millionaire is under the spotlight now.
Abdul makes it to his room. He plops down onto the bed. His phone rings again, this time he answers. “Hello”.
Mama G is on the line and she gives him a stern warning about the woman at the courthouse. “She is determined to bring you down.”
Abdul X rolls his eyes in his head. The woman who will remain nameless is from his past and has been on a smear campaign because she is jealous. Years were taken off of her when she went down with the drug cartel MoneyMakers. Abdul refused to let his life be hampered by their influence. He was successful until recent events.
The MoneyMakers keep coming in and out of the tri-state area. Several of them have been caught, but they keep escaping justice. No one knows why. RICO charges have been filed against them.
Abdul is satisfied he has escaped from the cares of this world.
