Mother’s Day
Godffirmation is a prophetic ministry, God-blog and God-brand, sharing affirmation & confirmation based on the scripture.
Scripture: Exodus 2:1-10
Mother’s Day is celebrated in the U. S. A. People from all over flood stores and restaurants to celebrate the national holiday. It is common for churches to have special services or luncheons on the Saturday before the official holiday. Mothers carry their children and guide them through life by raising them until adulthood. Some women are celebrated for ‘mothering’ people that they did not birth.
Have you ever wondered about a celebration of mothers based on the Bible? I have and I wonder what motherhood was like 2000 years ago without modern technology too! Moses’ mother Jochebed stood out to me. She gave birth to him during a time that was risky. She hid Moses until he could not be hidden anymore. Then Moses was placed in a river and floated right to the Princess. The hand of God was on him.
Jochebed: Moses, Miriam and Aaron’s mother
She hid him during a time when the Hebrew children were under attack by Pharaoh. Midwives were ordered to kill the Hebrew children, but two of them disobeyed refusing to participate. Moses avoided genocide because he was saved. His sister Miriam played a significant role in his life by getting a nursemaid for the princess, Jochebed. Jochebed saw her baby again!
The meaning of her name was significant:
Definition : (jahk' eh buhd) Personal name meaning, Yahweh's glory. In Exodus 6:20 , the wife of Amram and the mother of Miriam, Aaron, and Moses. She was a member of the tribe of Levi. Her name includes the divine name Yahweh, evidence that the name Yahweh was known before the time of Moses. Source: Holman's Dictionary
The meaning behind her name and the children she birthed are definitely connected. As a matter of fact Moses asked God to show him his glory in Exodus 33. Miriam a prophetess and Aaron a Levite priest were Moses’ siblings. These three had intertwined callings and destiny on their lives. They functioned differently in their call, but both were involved in the story of Moses.
Jochebed birthed a prophet and a deliverer for the children of Israel. He was a spiritual leader with thousands following him out of Egyptian slavery. Moses was marked for a miracle and did many acts that could only be attributed to God. Do you think his mother would have been godly proud? We do not know because the bible is silent on this idea. However, Psalm 127:3 celebrates children, “Children are the heritage of the Lord. And the fruit of the womb is His reward.”
Moses had his ups, downs, victories and shortfalls (Exodus 2 BSB). He was still a man of God that did the courageous act of obeying God by leading the Hebrews out of Egypt.
Prominent Moms in the Bible:
Hannah - mother of Samuel (Judge & Prophet)
Rebecca - mother of Jacob & Esau
Rachel - mother of Joseph & Benjamin
Leah - mother of Judah and ancestry line of Jesus
Mary - mother of the Savior
The women in the short list above have been talked about for thousands of years. A small part of their legacy is used to encourage men and women all over the world. Giving birth to people of this magnitude is a lot to fathom in my modern mind! The clearest message I have gotten from this group of women is WHAT YOU GIVE BIRTH TO MATTERS AND CAN BE A CHANGE AGENT!

What lesson have you taken away from these women of the Bible? If you are not sure, look up some scriptures related to the women and their story.
Write down 2 of the miracles performed by Moses. What do you think of them? Do you believe God can still perform miracles?
