Are You Diligent?
Diligence defined is steady in application to business. This word led me to think and ponder on a few questions when I saw the word business in the definition. The questions are listed below:
Whose business are you about?
Are you minding your own business?
Is business operating as usual?
The scripture in Luke 2:49 came to mind too. Jesus is a child saying he is about his Father’s business. We must also be about the Father’s business. His idea of business was probably much different than ours. We can see some of the things that were accomplished in the scriptures. In worldly terminology, when you hear or see the word business, you might think of local or worldwide businesses that service others.
The business Jesus was about was God’s business. All of our earthly business is God’s business, whether it involves working at a job, serving in church, volunteering, etc. I am sure you get the picture. Our entire life is God’s business, but sometimes we do not want God in our business. We don’t want people to tell our business. We say “It’s none of your business”. There is a lot involved in the word BUSINESS. To put it into context, the word business means in the things that are my Fathers.
Well, God is our father and we are his sons & daughters right. So I hope praying “Our Father which art..” falls into this context. We should consider God in the things that we do, even if it is for commerce or what you do as a trade. All things are God’s and with His divine inspiration coupled with our obedience we are capable to do His will in the earth. Is there a business or some business you should attend to? We do not want to leave our work undone.
I have noticed there is a rise in entrepreneur endeavors, side hustles and other business ventures. It is also important to have God involved in this aspect of business as well. The first endeavor I had was teaching piano lessons. It qualified as a side hustle and also involved a business plan. The truth is, nobody really knows what needed to be done to keep it going. It looked like an easy thing to learn and do but just learning the piano required:
Assignments, practice, learning scales, learning chords, learning circle of 5th’s, reading music, knowing how fast to play, playing staccato notes, time commitments, discipline and doing what my teacher told me to do, doing plays, singing with others in groups, travelling to different counties to play in recitals, play rehearsal, told to keep my fingernails clipped etc. I had a full time job at the time while I learned the language of the piano for which I was charged $5.00 per lesson.
I purchased a keyboard, purchased songbooks, had to learn new songs, had to teach new songs, purchased a shirt from the teacher because there was a uniform, started playing in church as a nervous student, learned how to sing the song while I was playing, studied sight singing, studied notes, played with my eyes closed, took voice lessons and I will stop there. It just looks like I only play the piano but there was a process leading up to it and things that I still have to be committed to doing today. It required diligence, dedication and I remained excited throughout the process of playing publicly. I had one goal, playing for my church. So when I say stick to it, it is based on this and many other experiences I have had to reach a desired outcome.
Don’t lose sight of what God is doing, able to do and willing to do by focusing on the wrong type of business. Remember you need due diligence in the things of God.
