NATIONAL POETRY MONTH

“Roses are red

Violets are blue

I love Jesus

How about you?”

By Trena Turner

Words that speak to someones heart are not always easy to write. People are in different phases of life. Different words and phrases can be used to lift someones spirit. It may or may not effect the listener or reader the way you intended. Being intentional with writing is important, but you may need to research your target audience in order to teach them a transforming truth.

Writing letters is not as common as it was in the past. In schools across the country handwriting is not part of the curriculum. A signature is not being taught to students; I had to learn cursive to successfully pass 3rd grade! But there is hope because lettering has become a popular art form for those who like pretty words on paper, bags and graphic art.

Text messages on the phone have taken over conversations. Social media allows people to use written, visual and verbal communication to get their opinion in front of the masses. In fact, social media is how I found out about National Poetry Month. There is still time to celebrate!

The first time I saw it, I was reminded of a movie named “Dead Poets Society”. A famous quote from this work is “No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world.”

Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou are two popular African-American/Black poets. Their writings are generation spanning classics within our communities.

Well, the Bible contains a lot of poetry. Books like Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes & Song of Solomon contain poetry. This passages were written 1000’s of years ago but are still used as inspiration in modern society. Even Lamentations is considered poetry. Some popular prayers are considered poetry too! We do not think of poetry as a prayer, depending upon the authors intent it can be in the category of a poem.

The definition of poem is: a piece of writing that partakes of the nature of both speech and song that is nearly always rhythmical, usually metaphorical, and often exhibits such formal elements as meter, rhyme, and stanzaic structure: something that arouses strong emotions because of its beauty.

Poetry does not have to have formal speech, but there are elements it needs to be considered a poem. In todays culture spoken word has become popular. There was a television show named Def Poetry Jam. You can watch the series on Hulu with a premium subscription.

Greeting cards contain poetry; they are popular for birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, and other celebrations.

Poetry is a fixture. Poems are loved by millions. Spoken word is part of the culture. How will you include poetry in your day? You can read one in the Bible. You can write a poem. You can listen to poems.
